2 Stars Very general video - Doesn’t cover all the questions
I was disappointed in this video because it didn’t cover a lot of the questions I have about soldering - how to keep my tip clean (use of sponge, use of a sal ammonic block), how to tin my tip, etc. Instead, Payne just covers the act of soldering. She also moves very quickly and doesn’t always explain what she means, which makes it a little confusing. I was looking for a a video course in copper-foil soldering and this did not really explain to me how to correct the issues I’m having with my own soldering. While it was helfpul to see someone in the act of soldering, I didn’t get $30 worth of advice from the video.
4 Stars EXcellent for the beginner
This is the first time I have seen Vicki Payne. I learned to do stained glass many years ago when I lived in Tucson. I bought this video a year or so ago when I was considering getting getting back into the hobby to do a couple of special pieces for friends but I never got around to watching it.
Frankly, my soldering technique was never that good and recently, when I had to do some soldering for a metal project I remembered this video and decided to watch it. The video is relatively short, but, how much can you really say about soldering. The summary on Amazon is a little overblown in regards to safety. OK, you should work in a vented place and never leave your soldering iron laying around.
The discussion of types of solder and when to use it was good. A couple of handy hints on flux were also of value.
What I really liked was the recommendations on spot soldering and the visual demo of came and foil soldering technique. I also picked up some tips on soldering brass which was what I was really looking for. I guess that I am one of those people that learns better by seeing it done.
I gave the video a 4 because it told me exactly what I wanted to know. Production technique was OK and Vicki was easy to understand.
Could it have been done in 10 minutes and would the info all fit on one sheet of paper? yes. Would I have learned as much? No! Was it too expensive for what you get? Probably, but you do pay a premium for experience. Will it win any awards? No. Will I try another of her videos? Probably.
3 Stars ok dvd
For this actor this is good. I personally do not like her but this time she is at least informative. Not as bad as her other videos. Would not necessarily recommend it but for basic info sure go for it.

5 Stars good
The book was in good shape and new condition. The instructions are precise and informative.
3 Stars Mixed feelings on it, but a well balanced book
If you’ve never touched stained glass, this book is great. Its got accurate info on leaded and copper foil glass, and projects that progress from easy to difficult.
However the book feels a bit thin, and as mentioned already the inside margin along the book spine is less than 1/4″, meaning you absolutely have to cut all the patterns out of the book with a razorblade very carefully.
If you’ve been doing glass a while, I would look for a different book.
2 Stars disapointing
My biggest complaint about this book is it’s design; the gutter width (the “blank’ area between facing pages) is far too narrow for the columns of text closest to the binding of the book to be read with any ease whatsoever. One would literally have to tear the pages out of this book to read them without wrestling with the binding. Forget about having this book lay open as you work.
The black and white photos are of poor quality, disapointing in a book about a medium charecterized by it’s vibrant colors. The designs provided with the book are, well- ugly.
The author is vague in his recomendations regarding tools and supplies, suggesting (infuriatingly) that one consult their “intructor or supplier”. Step up to the plate, name names! I bought your book you weenie. What kind of soldering iron did YOU shell out your hard-earned money for?
I wouldn’t have bought this book if I had seen it in a bookstore where I could pick it up and leaf through it. Ugh.
Do yourself a favor. Do a “Google” search for “stained glass instruction” there are guys willing to part with all the info in this book for free. Save eleven bucks.
5 Stars Excellent beginner’s book
I bought this book as an addition to my stained glass class through the local high school. It is great. It helps fill in the gaps and reminds me of what I forgot.
This book covers both copper foil and leading. While I can’t speak for the leading, it has excellent information on the copper foil method. It’s information on equipment is also up to date. Though the cover is in color the rest of the book is in black and white. This is probably why a book so jam packed with information, was so inexpensive. I didn’t find the black and while photos to be a negative at all. There are pictures of everything and this is great. So many books just give you patterns and words.
Its tips on glass cutting I found very useful, since you don’t always run into everything in class. It saved me some broken glass. Its troubleshooting hints on soldering were handy as well.
Also there are some projects in the back. I haven’t made any but they have complete instructions (pictures too) and the patterns included.

The Stained Glass Garden Projects and Patterns

How to best combine two passions–in this case, gardening and stained glass? In their fifth book, Shannon and Torlen team to produce 28 different projects, all worthy of emulation. Breezing through the fundamentals squeezed into, unfortunately, too few pages, Shannon and Torlen feature elegant nature-inspired designs in two waves: one for lead came, the other for copper foil. Regardless of the technique, each project includes dimensions, number of pieces, glass required, other materials and tools, step-by-step instructions, a ready-to-enlarge template, and notes and tips (for instance, never leave a burning candle unattended). Applications are varied, such as window and garden panels, jiggle stakes, lanterns, mobiles, bird feeders, torchieres, garden sprinklers, even a Zen garden. And nature is well represented, from a bee and butterflies to snowy egrets and spiderwebs. Too bad the layout is cramped and the photographs way too small. Barbara Jacobs
